Understanding the Two Parts of Original Medicare

MEDICARE

Original Medicare is the foundation of the federal health insurance program for individuals 65 and older, and for some younger people with disabilities. It includes Part A and Part B, each covering different aspects of health care

Medicare Part A — Hospital Insurance

Part A helps cover inpatient services, including:

  • Hospital stays
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care

2025 Costs:

  • Deductible: $1,676 per benefit period
  • Hospital coinsurance:
    • $0 for days 1–60
    • $419/day for days 61–90
    • $838/day for lifetime reserve days (up to 60 days)
    • All costs after day 150

Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance:

  • $0 for days 1–20
  • $209.50/day for days 21–100
  • All costs after day 100

Most people qualify for premium-free Part A based on work history.

Medicare Part B — Medical Insurance

Part B covers outpatient care and preventive services, such as:

  • Doctor visits
  • Preventive screenings
  • Outpatient hospital care
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Mental health services

2025 Costs:

  • Monthly Premium: $185 (standard rate; higher-income individuals may pay more)
  • Annual Deductible: $257
  • Coinsurance: After the deductible, Medicare pays 80% of approved services; you pay 20%
